Falls, bumps, fractures, burns, sharps, and gunshot wounds can all cause nerve injury in the arms and legs. Nerve injuries can cause weakness, immobility, deformity, and dysfunction ranging from partial to total immobilization (paralysis). If the nerve has not lost its integrity completely, or if the nerve ends have been surgically fused together, the nerve regenerates itself from the top. Joints and muscles must be safeguarded until the nerve regeneration process is complete in order to regain lost functions. This can be achieved through a rehabilitation program tailored to the patient's condition. The rehabilitation program mainly consists of patient education, sensory and muscle training and splinting.
